The Will of William Grindon who died in 1726.
"In the Name of God Amen I William Grindon of Ashhulme in the parish of Alstonefield and County of Stafford being Sick and weak in body but of Sound and Perfect memory (praise be given to God for the same) and knowing the uncertainty of this life and being desirous to Settle things in order doe make this my last Will & Testament in manner and forme following, that is to say, First and principally I commend my Soule to Almighty God my Creator assuredly believing that I shall receave full pardon and free remission of all my Sins and bee saved by the precious death & Merits of my blessed Saviour & Redeemer Christ Jesus and my body to the Earth from whence itt was formed to be buried in such decent and Christian manner as my Executrix hereafter named shall think meet and convenient And as touching this worldly Estate which the Lord in his infinite mercy hath lent me my my [sic] mind and meaning is the Same Shall bee Imployed and bestowed as hereafter by this my last Will is expressed
Imprimis = I give and bequeath unto my son William Grindon the Sume of one hundred pounds to bee paid to him by my Executrix hereafter named So Soon as hee shall attayne too and accomplish the full Age of one and twenty Years and in the mean time to have a mentenance and Education Answerable to his degree & qualety.
Item – I give and bequeath unto Anne & Elizabeth my Daughters the Sume of Sixty Pounds a piece to bee paid to them by my Said Executrix as they shall Severally attayne to the Age of one and twenty Years and in the mean time to have each a Mentenance and Education answerable to their degrees & qualety; but if itt should happen that eyther or both of them Should dye before their Legacy becomes due that then in Such Case itt is my Will and Mind that my Son William Shall have the benifit thereof And in like manner if my Son William happen to dye before hee attaynes the full Age of one and twenty Years that then & in Such Case my two Daughters Anne & Elizabeth Shall have his Legacy equally devided betwixt them if they then bee both living; but if eyther of them Should dye during the life of my Son William that then my Surviving Daughter shall not only have the benifit of my Son Williams hundred pounds but also the Sixty pounds so bequeathed as aforesaid to Such daughter as Shall happen to dye before her Legacy becomes due.
And whereas the Computation of my Effects does amount to about the Sume of Foure hundred pounds the remayning part whereof (after my Debts & Legacies & Funerall expences are all lawfully discharged) I give & bequeath unto my Loving wife Sarah Grindon for her to dispose off too & amongst all or any of my foresaid Children as Shee think fitt. But for want of Such disposition in her life time and after her decease, I give the Same to be Equally devided too & amongst So many of my Said Children as Shall bee living att her death Share and Share a lyke; or if there happen to bee but one living att Such time (in failure of her disposition as aforesaid) that Such Surviving Child Shall have the benifitt of the whole as aforesaid.
And lastly I doe hereby disannul frustrate & make void all former & other Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made and doe by this my last Will and Testament Constitute & appoynt Sarah Grindon my Loving wife Sole Executrix hereof. In Witness whereof I have hereunto Sett my hand & Seale the fourteenth day of March Anno Regni Georgii nunc Regis Magna Britain & Duodecimo [In the twelfth year of the reign of George now king of Great Britain] Anno Dom 1725/6
