Philip John Egerton 1882-1914

Philip John Egerton was born on 10 April 1882 at Bloxham in Oxfordshire, the son of Hubert Decimus Egerton 1848-1932 and his wife née Annie Horner 1846-1926 of Chislehurst in Kent. He was educated at Bloxham School and Winchester College.

From leaving school he joined the Militia, and after service at the Cape during the South African War 1901-1902, he passed with distinction in 1903 into the Regular Army (1st Battalion Border Regiment) as 2nd Lieutenant. He was appointed Lieutenant in 1905 (1) and Adjutant of the battalion in 1910.

During the First World War Lieutenant Philip John Egerton fell mortally wounded near Ypres on 16 October 1914, and died on the following day.

His is the earliest grave in Ypres Town Cemetery (War Cloister: Outer C1 Grave D1.8).

Administration of his estate was granted on 30 November 1915 (2).
