Jane Maria Berisford was born in 1836 at Ballidon in Derbyshire. Her father was then farming at Ballidon Moor Farm.
She was married to William Henry Brindley at Bradbourne on 21 June 1865 by licence. He was born in Darley near Derby in 1836, and was a woollen merchant. They lived at 7 Tenant Street in Derby. Recorded as living with them there in 1871 and 1891 was her unmarried sister-in-law Elizabeth Berisford (born in 1831 at Atlow in Derbyshire).
Although she was baptised Jane Maria she was also known as Maria Jane
Her husband William Henry Brindley died at Derby in 1891 aged 60 years.
When the 1901 Census was taken she was living with her brother Samuel Berisford in a large villa called Devonshire House in the Park at Buxton in Derbyshire. Although he was recorded as being a sugar merchant, he had presumably retired aged 74 years from his business as grocer and wine merchant in Macclesfield in Cheshire. Of their three female domestic servants, one was Elizabeth Webster aged 22 years and unmarried born at Parwich in 1879.
Signature on 1911 Census Return
Her brother Samuel Berisford died in 1903, and when the 1911 Census was taken Jane Maria Brindley had moved back to Derby, living on private means in lodgings at 82 Curzon Street. She had borne one child who had died by 1911, whose name is unknown.
