James Wagstaff was born in 1855 at Alsop-en-le-Dale in Derbyshire, the son of Thomas Wagstaff and his wife nee Harriet Hambleton.
In 1878 he married Charlotte Bowler Botham at Fenny Bentley church in Derbyshire. They lived in Fenny Bentley, and had the following children, all born there:
Mary Wagstaff. She was born in 1879.
Frances Ann. She was born in 1881. When the Census was taken in 1901 she was recorded as unmarried, living with her parents, and working as a cop winder at a cotton mill. In 1911 she was still single and working as a general servant.
Harriet Wagstaff. She was born in 1883.
Hannah Wagstaff. She was born in 1886. In 1911 she was unmarried and employed as housekeeper for her bachelor uncle John Wagstaff farming at Biggin near Hartington in Derbyshire. In 1919 she was married at Fenny Bentley to George William Slater. She died in 1954 aged 68 years.
Thomas Wagstaff. He was born in 1888. In 1911 Private Thomas Wagstaff 43726 was serving with the Sherwood Foresters stationed at Crownhill Barracks at Plympton in Devon. He had enlisted in Ashbourne in Derbyshire. During the First World War he attained the rank of Acting Sergeant with the 7th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment, serving in France and Flanders.
He was killed in action on 12 October 1916.
Lizzie Wagstaff. She was born in 1890.
Nellie Wagstaff. She was born in 1892.
Ada Wagstaff. She was born in 1896. In 1911 she was unmarried and employed as assistant housekeeper for her bachelor uncle John Wagstaff farming at Biggin near Hartington in Derbyshire. In 1920 she was married to Harry Watson at Biggin church. She died in 1976 aged 80 years.
Arthur Wagstaff. He was born in 1898.
Edna Wagstaff. She was born in 1900. She was married to Edward Francis Bryan at Fenny Bentley in 1924.
Eleanor Wagstaff. She was born in 1902.
