Harriett Horobin was born on 16 March 1813 at Crowdecote in Hartington Middle Quarter parish in Derbyshire, the daughter of Thomas Horobin 1777-1858 of Longnor in Staffordshire and his wife née Ellen Mellor 1786-1868.

She was married to Thomas Gilman on 17 August 1835 at Hartington. He was born in 1810, the son of Abel Gilman and his wife nee Hannah Milward (1).

When they were first married they lived at Hartington, with his widowed father Abel Gilman who was a blacksmith there. However by 1861 they had moved to Town End at Longnor (2) where Thomas Gilman continued his trade as blacksmith.

They had the following children :

Abel Gilman. He was born in 1836. He married Martha (maiden surname unknown) born at Reapsmoor, Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire in 1867. He was a blacksmith, and they lived in Fairfield, Buxton in Derbyshire. They had six children, John Gilman who was dead by 1911 and the following living in 1911 (all born in Buxton): Walter Abel Gilman (born 1876 in Buxton), Harriet Gilman (born 1877), George Gilman (born 1881), Mary Ellen Gilman (born 1882) and one other. Abel Gilman died in 1916 age 80 years.

Thomas Gilman. He was born in 1838.

John Gilman. He was born in 1839. He married Hannah Green at Hartington on 23 May 1866. They lived in Crowdecote, and had the following children, all baptised at Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire: Ann Ellen Gilman (baptised on 4 November 1866), Mary Gilman (22 March 1868) and Thomas Gilman (21 March 1870). In the baptism register their father John Gilman was described as being a miller in 1866, a blacksmith in 1868 and a labourer in 1870.

Agnes Gilman. She was born in 1841.

Hannah Gilman. She was born in 1842. She died in 1865 aged 23 years, and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 13 September 1865.

William Gilman. He was born in 1844. He became a blacksmith like his father and grandfather. He was lodging with his brother Abel Gilman in Buxton in 1881 a general labourer, and still unmarried in 1891 living with his then widowed mother at Town End in Longnor.

Ellen Gilman. She was born in 1845. In 1871 she was a dress maker, single and living with her parents.

Harriett Gilman. She was born in 1848. She died in 1852 aged only two years, and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 16 June 1850.

Rachel Gilman. She was born in 1849. She died in 1852 aged only three years, and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 15 November 1852.

Jethro Gilman. He was born in 1851. He was lodging with his brother Abel Gilman in Buxton in 1881, married and a general labourer.

George Gilman. He was born in 1853.

Harriett Gilman. She was born in 1855.

Their mother Hannah Gilman died at Longnor in 1892 aged 79 years, and was buried at Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire on 30 March 1892.

Her husband Thomas Gilman had predeceased her in 1883, and was buried at Earl Sterndale on 19 July 1883 (3).

Notes

(1) He was a smith in Alstonefield parish when he married Hannah Milward at Earl Sterndale on 12 April 1798.
(2) In the 1861 Census Return the place of residence is recorded as Market Place in Longnor, That may however have been the same address, as in the 1881 and 1891 Returns the address is again Town End in Longnor.
(3) In the Burial Register his age is given as 75, but he was actually 73 years of age.
