George Horobin was born on 3 October 1825 at Crowdecote in Hartington parish in Derbyshire, the son of Thomas Horobin 1777-1858 of Longnor in Staffordshire and his wife née Ellen Mellor 1786-1868.

He married Ann (maiden surname unknown) at Bakewell in 1857. She was born at Crowdecote in 1834.

When the Census was taken in 1861 they were living at Buts End in Sheen in Staffordshire. In 1871 the family were staying as visitors at Llechwedd Du Farm at Cefyn Llys Isa in Montgomeryshire, Wales. That was the farm of George Mottram and his brother Samuel Mottram, born at Waterfall in Staffordshire but later of nearby Grindon in Staffordshire. When the 1881 Census was taken, they were living at Pantan House in Llanfair Caereinion in Montgomeryshire, farming 87 acres. By 1891 however they had moved to Whitehouse Farm at Kingsbury in Warwickshire.

They had the following children:

Their father George Horobin died in 1910 aged 80 years.
