Hannah Bennington was born in 1864 at Milldale in Alstonefield parish in Staffordshire, the daughter of John Murrell Bennington 1828-1901 and his wife nee Hannah Austin.
In 1881 she was working as a dairy maid, aged seventeen, for Ralph Beardmore 1833-1910 at Perry Foot, Peak Forest in Derbyshire (1). The Beardmore family came from Stanshope Hall in Alstonefield, to which they had returned by 1891.
In 1899 she was married to William Higton, born in 1840 and a farmer at Hall Fields in Wetton, Staffordshire. They had no children.
In 1911 her nephew John Bennington, son of her sister Alice Bennington, was working at the farm. He was then aged 15 years.
(1) Ralph Beardmore 1833-1910 had a daughter Elizabeth Waterhouse Beardmore 1869-1932 who in 1893 was married to Gilbert Gould 1864-1948 of Pilsbury Grange. He was the son of Gilbert Gould 1821-1891 and was a brother of Nathaniel Gould 1824-1874) the father of Nat Gould.
