He was born on 10 September 1829, the eldest son of George Darby MP 1796-1878 and his wife née Maria Homfray, and baptised on 10 September 1829 at Warbleton in Sussex. He was educated at Christ Church College Oxford, graduating Master of Arts, and became a barrister-at-law.
They had no children.
Jonathan George Norton Darby died on 17 March 1870 aged only 40 years, and was buried at Warbleton.
In 1871 the widowed Susan Margaret Darby was living at 39 Westbourne Park Road in London. With her was her aunt-in-law Miss Sarah Darby aged 76 and two female domestic servants. In 1881 she was living with her father at Pashley House at Ticehurst in Sussex.
By 1891 she and her unmarried sister Harriet had inherited Pashley House, and were living there together with a cook, parlour maid, housemaid, lady's maid, kitchen maid, under housemaid, and house boy. Visiting them when the census was taken was her widowed aunt Ellen Egerton, her cousin Ellen Mary Egerton, and Katherine Egerton.
Visiting them there in 1901 was Caroline Augusta Egerton. The sisters were still in ownership at Pashley House when the 1911 Census was taken.
