Summary of the Will of Elizabeth Gillum 1789

I Elizabeth Gillum of the Parish of St Leonard Shoreditch, widow, do make and declare my last Will and Testament as follows

£800 in 4% Bank Annuities

- I give £400 in trust for my brother-in-law Nicholas Dukes of Bow gentleman for life, and then to my godson William Dukes Grice when 21, using the interest meanwhile for his maintenance and education or whatever William Grice and Rebecca his wife think fit, and if he dies before becoming entitled to it then to William Grice and Rebecca his wife

- I give £400 in trust for Lucy Buskin (wife of Captain Anthony Buskin of Virginia Street, Wapping) for life, not controlled by her husband, and then equally between her daughters then living when 21, and if none then equally between her sons then living when 21, and in default added to my personal estate


£600 in 3% Consolidated Bank Annuities

- I give £300 to Thomas Gillum grandson of my late husband John Gillum now at Madras in the East Indies if and when he shall arrive in England, but if he dies abroad then to his younger brother Raphael Gillum when 21, and in default added to my personal estate

- I give £200 to my grandson Raphael Gillum when 21, in default to Thomas Gillum, and in default added to my personal estate

- I give £100 to my servant Mary Baddely if living with me at my decease


£800 in 3% Reduced Bank Annuities

- I give £50 to Robert Davies of the parish of St Leonard, Shoreditch, cheesemonger, as a token of my respect for him and as some acknowledgement for executing the will of my late husband and for his trouble hereinafter mentioned

- I give £50 to William Ramsay of the East India House in London, gentleman

- I give £50 to my nephew William Grice of Walbrook London, hardware man

(these last three legacies being recompense for any trouble in executing my Will)

- I give £200 to Charles Keeler of Mile End, print cutter

- and out of the rest such money shall be raised by sale as necessary for paying the expenses of my funeral and executing my Will and settling my affairs, and in paying legacies and for rings as follows:

20 guineas to Miss Mary Marks of Drury Lane spinster as a token of my respect

£20 to Miss Susanna Simons spinster, daughter of Anna Susanna Simons of Kensington widow

£10 to the Trustees of the Charity School in the parish of St Ann Limehouse (where I was born)

£10 to the Trustees of the Girls Charity School in the parish of St Leonard Shoreditch

I give my servant Mary Baddely, if living with me at my death, the furniture in her room and £5 for mourning, in addition to any due wages

I give a ring of a guinea value to each of:
- my three executors
- Mr. William Blackmore of Well Close Square, apothecary
- Mr. Steevens Totton of Spital Square, gentleman
- the two sisters of William Ramsay

I give Lucy Buskin all my wearing apparel and household linen

I give my grandson William Gillum (the older brother of Thomas Gillum) all my Printed Books and my Book Case

I give Mrs. Elizabeth Craddock of the parish of St Leonard Shoreditch spinster my Rose Diamond Ring

I give Mrs. Mary Davies, wife of Robert Davies, my Diamond Ring with three Diamonds

I give to Thomas Gillum (if and when he returns to England) my best Diamond Ring with five Diamonds and my large Silver Waiter, Silver Tankard and my Gold Watch, and in default to Raphael Gillum when 21, and in default to be considered as part of my estate

I give all the rest of my Plate to my godson William Dukes Grice

I direct that all the money legacies be paid within three months and that the annuities be transferred to the legatees within six months

My body is to be interred in the Vault at the Church at Limehouse as near to my late husband as may be, and my funeral is to be conducted in the same manner as was his

and all my household goods, furniture, pictures, china, glasses and fixtures (except the furniture given to my maidservant) to be sold and the proceeds invested in the Funds for Thomas Gillum if he returns to England, and if he dies abroad then everything in this bequest to Raphael Gillum when 21, and in default to be part of my Estate

and all the rest of my estate and effects I give to William Grice and Rebecca his wife

and I appoint Robert Davies, William Ramsay and William Grice Executors of my will and Trustees for the purposes therein, the Trustees having powers to hold the bequests to legatees under 21, appoint new trustees, and manage the investments

and I revoke all other Wills made by me

5 December 1789 after first initialling the interlineations

Signed sealed published declared and delivered by Elizabeth Gillum in the presence of us, the word “Consolidated” and the words “shall die before he comes to England and that the said Raphael Gillum” being first interlined in the first side of this Sheet of Paper and “the Legacy of Fifty Pounds reduced Annuities Given to her Nephew William Grice” being also first interlined about the middle of the second side of this sheet – Steevens Totton Spital Square – Robert Warner his Clerk

Proved at London 26 June 1792 before the Worshipful Thomas Champion Crespigny DL Surrogate of the Rt. Hon. Sir William Wynne DL Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oaths of Robert Davies, William Ramsay and William Grice the Executors named in the Will to whom administration was granted having been first sworn duly to administer.
