Richard Wetherell was born in 1773 at Oxford, the son of Nathan Wetherell 1726-1807 and his wife née Richarda Croke 1743-1812.
He entered University College in Oxford, matriculating on 15 December 1791. He graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1795 and Master of Arts in 1798. He was successively appointed Rector of Westbury-on-Severn in 1798, Rector of Wick Rissington in 1809, Rector of Notgrove in 1810, all in Gloucestershire (1), and Rural Dean of the Forest Deanery by the Bishop of Gloucester in 1812 (2).
On 23 November 1796 he married Caroline May 1778-1833 at Ticehurst in Sussex (3).
She was born in 1778 at Ticehurst, the daughter of Thomas May of Pashley House and his wife Mary, and was baptised on 20 February 1778 at Ticehurst. The property had been owned by the May family since the sixteenth century, having previously been in the possession of the Pashley family. On the marriage of Caroline May (the only surviving child) to Richard Wetherell the manor and estate came into the possession of the Wetherell family (4).
They had the following children:
Mary Wetherell. She was born on 27 August 1797 at Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire (5), and was baptised there on 20 September 1797. She was married in 1826 to the Reverend John Eveleigh 1799-1863 of Oriel College in Oxford, Vicar of Darenth in Kent (6). She died in 1832 aged 35 years (7).
Richard Wetherell. He was born on 30 March 1800 at Frant in Sussex, and was baptised on 13 April 1800 at Westbury-on-Severn. He entered University College in Oxford, matriculating on 27 October 1818. He lived at Frant, and became a Captain in the Royal Navy, a Justice of the Peace and a Major in the Sussex Artillery Militia. He married Editha Lee Tebitt (8), and died in 1893.
Elizabeth Wetherell. She was born in 1802, and was baptised on 5 January 1803 at Westbury-on-Severn. She was unmarried, and died on 26 January 1865 at 15 St Giles Street in Oxford aged 64 years (9).
Caroline Wetherell. She was born in 1805, and was baptised on 20 January 1805 at Westbury-on-Severn. She died on 13 February 1827 aged 22 years (10).
Thomas May Wetherell. He was born in 1807, and was baptised on 14 June 1807 at Westbury-on-Severn. He entered Magdalen College in Oxford, matriculating on 26 July 1824. He graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1830 at Trinity College in Dublin and Master of Arts in 1837. He was appointed Vicar of Flaxley in Gloucestershire in 1852. On 4 July 1833 he had married Anne Winchester at St Martin's-in-the-Fields in London. She was the youngest daughter of Henry Winchester of Oakfield Lodge, Hawkhurst, Kent, Alderman of the City of London (11). He died on 12 April 1873.
Nathan Wetherell 1808-1887. He was born in 1808, and was baptised on 12 February 1809 at Westbury-on-Severn. He married Susan Gould 1805-1879, the daughter of Thomas Gould 1752-1829 and his wife née Frances Hunt 1766-1836. He died in 1887.
Eleanora Wetherell. She was born in 1808, and was baptised on 22 September 1816 at Westbury-on-Severn. She was married on 27 December 1842 at Ticehurst to Charles Edmund Hayes Newington of Highlands in Sussex, in a double ceremony with the marriage of her sister Frances Richarda Wetherell to Francis Henry Rich (12). She died on 4 January 1892 at Lee in Kent (13).
Charles Wetherell. He was born in 1810, and was baptised on 16 September 1810 at Westbury-on-Severn. He entered Worcester College in Oxford, matriculating on 13 May 1830. He graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1834 and Master of Arts in 1837. He was appointed Curate of Staunton in Worcestershire, and died on 18 May 1845 after a short illness at Westbury-on-Severn (14).
Henry Wetherell. He was born in 1812, and baptised on 31 May 1812 at Westbury-on-Severn.
Frances Richarda Wetherell. She was born in 1813 and baptised at Ticehurst on 24 October 1813. She was married to Francis Henry Rich on 27 December 1842 at Tilehurst, in a double ceremony with the marriage of her sister Eleanora Wetherell to Charles Edmund Hayes Newington. Francis Henry Rich was the son of Anthony Rich of Welbeck Street in London (15).
William Wetherell. He was born in 1815, and was baptised on 30 April 1815 at Westbury-on-Severn. He entered New College in Oxford, matriculating on 25 May 1837. He was a Fellow of the college from 1837 to 1860. He graduated Bachelor of Civil Law in 1843 and Master of Arts in 1856. He was appointed Bursar of the college in 1844, Dean of Canon Law in 1845, Dean of Civil Law in 1848, and Sub-Warden in 1850. He was Rector of Heyford Warren in Oxfordshire from 1860, and died on 23 October 1864.
Charlotte Wetherell. She was born in 1818, and was baptised on 21 June 1818 at Westbury-on-Severn. She died on 31 August 1834 at Ticehurst aged sixteen years (16).
Alexander Robert Wetherell. He was born in 1820, and was baptised on 28 October 1820 at Westbury-on-Severn.
Edward Wetherell. He was born in 1822, and was baptised at Ticehurst on 15 August 1822.
Their mother Caroline Wetherell née May died on 23 April 1833 (17).
On 12 July 1836 Richard Wetherell married Mrs Sarah Maria Duff, the widow of Captain Robert Duff of the 98th Regiment, and daughter of C. Gordon Grey, Esquire (18). When the Census was taken in 1841 they were living at Pashley House. With them was his brother the Reverend James Wetherell, and also four female servants and four male servants. By 1851 however they had moved to The Limes at Hawkhurst in Kent. With them there was the Reverend James Wetherell, and four female servants and two male servants. Also with them were Frances Richarda Wetherell, Lillian Wetherell and Richard Wetherell.
The Reverend Richard Wetherell died on 22 January 1858 in London aged 84 years (19). His Will was proved on 30 March 1858 (20).
His widow Sarah Maria Wetherell died on 28 January 1858 in London (21). Her Will was proved on 20 February 1858 (22).
