His life and books
Northaw Place is a Georgian mansion in Hertfordshire lying on the northern edge of London, just outside the outer London circular motorway M25.
In the eighteenth century it was the country home of Thomas Gould 1752-1829 and his wife nee Frances Hunt 1766-1836.
The house is still there, but has long ceased being a private residence. By the end of the 1800s it had become a preparatory school, where one of its most famous pupils was Clement Attlee (1883-1967) the British prime minister from 1945 to 1951. The Northaw parkland has now become an exclusive modern development having some of the most expensive houses in England.
