Joseph Gould was the son of Joseph Gould 1715-1777, a mercer in Bakewell in Derbyshire and his wife Ellen Gilbert 1722-1792 the daughter of Thomas Gilbert of Cotton Hall in Staffordshire and his wife Elizabeth Philips.
He was born in Bakewell in 1757 and died at Ardwick in Manchester on 20 January 1821.
He married his first cousin Anne Wardle 1760-1816 on 28 July 1783 at Earl Sterndale. They lived in Ardwick, Manchester. She was born at Boosley Grange near Longnor in Staffordshire on 16 May 1760, the only child of William Wardle and Mary his wife. Mary Wardle nee Mary Gould 1721-1780 was a sister of Joseph Gould 1715-1777.
The children of Joseph and Anne Gould were Joseph Gould (born on 7 May 1784), William Gould, Thomas Gould (born in 1801, a solicitor in Sheffield in 1828), Nathaniel Gould, Lydia Gould, Richard Gould, John Gould (a merchant in Manchester in 1828), and Anne Gould.
