John Rose Hall was born in 1790, the son of John Hall of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and his wife née Mary Hunt.
He married Mrs Ellen Bromilow on 26 April 1845 at Farnworth in Lancashire. She was born Ellen Leigh in 1805 at Winwick near Warrington, then in Lancashire, the daughter of Thomas Holt Leigh, and baptised on 16 August 1806 at Leigh. She was the widow of James Bromilow (1).
They had a daughter Anne Hall, who was married to Edward McLaughlin who became a General in the Army. they had a son Edward McLaughlin born in 1859.
John Rose Hall was a merchant in Manchester trading in partnership with Richard Gould and Philip Gould from at least as early as 1828 (2). In 1834 Philip Gould left the business (3), and the partnership was dissolved in 1846 (4).
In 1838 John Rose Hall had inherited a Herefordshire estate at Cockshoot Lydiat in Brimfield parish from his uncle the Reverend Philip Hunt 1772-1838 (5). He then moved to reside there, and became a benevolent and greatly respected local squire. The neighbouring Ashwood Park estate that he had similarly inherited was however put up for sale in 1839 (6).
He was elected to Board of Guardians for Brimfield in 1849 (7).
In the severe winter of 1855 reports appeared in the local press of his charitable generosity: “SEASONABLE DONATION. John Rose Hall, Esq., of the Lydiats, Brimfield, has during the present severe weather distributed by ticket to his workpeople and the poor of the above parish, about six tons of coal, part of which has been delivered to them. This he has been in the habit of doing for several years past.” (8)
In 1857 the whole village celebrated the wedding of his daughter (9). He was long remembered for his "benefactions and exertions in the erection of the Rectory and endowment of the schools they were all so much indebted.” (10)
John Rose Hall died at The Lydiats on 21 May 1858 (11). His Will was proved on 30 June 1858 (12), and sale of his farm and extensive livestoch at the Lydiates began in accordance with the terms of his Will in 1859 (13).
His widow Ellen Hall died at The Lydiats on 31 January 1891 (14).
