Nat Gould

John Berisford 1832-1921

John Berisford was born in 1832 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire, the son of Samuel Berisford and his wife nee Ann Swindel 1802-1864.

In 1851 he was unmarried and working as an agricultural labourer for farmer Thomas Johnson at Nab End in Longnor, Staffordshire. In 1861 he was a carter, and lodging (perhaps just overnight) together with his wife in the household of George and Ann Buxton. George Buxton was the toll bar keeper at the Wormhill gate on the Buxton and Tideswell Turnpike Road.

In 1871 he was recorded as being a labourer at Wormhill in Derbyshire, but not then with his wife. When the 1881 Census was taken he was living at Lees House in Taddington in Derbyshire with three of his three children. He worked at the mill in Millers Dale.

He had married Elizabeth (maiden surname and date and place of marriage unknown). She was born in 1841 at Hartington in Derbyshire. She died before 1901, perhaps by 1871.

They had the following children, all born at Millers Dale near Wormhill and baptised at Wormhill:

Bertha Berisford. She was baptised on 9 August 1863.

Albert Berisford. He was baptised on 11 November 1866.

Eliza Anthrite Berisford. She was born in 1868, and baptised on 5 July 1868.

Esther Ann Berisford. She was baptised on 24 October 1869.

Samuel Berisford. He was born in 1872, and baptised on 25 August 1872. In 1891 he was living at the Bagshawe Arms in Wormhill aged 18, as a farm servant for Thomas Needham, farmer and innkeeper.

John Herman Berisford. He was born in 1875, and baptised on 14 February 1875. In 1891 he was living with his aunt Eliza Berisford in Church Street in Alstonefield aged 15, as an agricultural labourer. He died in 1921 at Glossop in Derbyshire.

John Berisford and his wife had six children, five of whom were living in 1911 and one had died by then.

He died in 1921 aged 91 years.
