Ellen Gould was born in 1830 at Grindon in Staffordshire, the daughter of John Gould 1793-1872 and his wife Anne Smith 1795-1834. She was baptised on 30 May 1832 at Grindon, and was known as Nelly.
In 1860 she was married to Thomas Lowndes. They had the following children:
Ellen Lowndes. She was born in 1861.
John Thomas Lowndes. He was born in 1869. In 1891 he was employed as a lime dresser labourer and lodging at Harpur Hill, Buxton in Derbyshire.
In 1871 she was was working as a corset maker, and living at "Bottom of Town" in Grindon with her father John Gould then a cottager having three acres. With her were her children Ellen Lowndes and John Thomas Lowndes.
In 1881 she was recorded in the Census Return as a dressmaker living in Leek Road, Butterton in Staffordshire with her daughter Ellen (also a dressmaker) and her son John. In 1891 she was a dressmaker living alone at Town Head in Butterton. In 1901 she was widowed and a retired seamstress living alone at Smiths House in Butterton.
She died in 1907 aged 78 years.
