Charles Gould was born in 1853 at Reaps Moor near Longnor in Staffordshire, the son of Charles Gould and his wife nee Ann Philips (born in 1834 at Warslow in Staffordshire). His father was an agricultural worker employing two men.
In 1861 Charles Gould was living with his parents and younger brother Thomas Gould at Old Place, Reaps Moor. Also in the household there were his unmarried aunts Sarah Philips (born 1835) and Hannah Philips (born 1843) both working there as house servants.
By 1871 his father was dead and he was living with his widowed mother and brother Thomas Gould in lodgings at Hogshaw Cottages in Buxton. Charles Gould was by then a stone mason aged eighteen.
He married Mary (maiden surname unknown) by 1881, when he was living with his wife and son Charles Gould (born 1880) at 11 Hogshaw Villas in Buxton.
Mary Gould died at Buxton in 1883 aged only 29 years.
In 1887 he married the widowed Mary Ellen Adams formerly Mary Ellen Middleton at Stockport in Cheshire. They lived at 9 New High Street in Fairfield but later moved to 4 Fairfield Road, which became 11 Midland Terrace, Fairfield Road in Buxton.
Charles Gould died in 1910 aged 57 years.
