William Gould was born in 1838 in Sheffield, the son of Thomas Gould 1802-1869 and his wife nee Frances Maria Brookfield 1805-1888. He became a solicitor, and lived in Todmorden, Yorkshire.

In 1863 William Gould married Martha Ann Vaughan 1841-1880 at Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire in Wales. She was a daughter of Edward Vaughan 1794-1852 and his wife Martha Whittingham 1803-1879. Their son Lewis E. Vaughan was to marry William Gould’s sister Frances Maria Gould 1847-1898 in 1876 in Todmorden.

In the churchyard of Christ Church in Todmorden there is a monumental inscription in memory of their three children who died in infancy, Edward Vaughan Gould (died on 6 December 1865 aged 1 year), Thomas Gould (died on 15 July 1870 aged 27 days), and Emily Gould (born on 2 August 1873 and died on 12 October 1873 aged 10 weeks and 4 days). Also commemorating with them is William Gould’s uncle “Richard Gould of Todmorden, formerly of Ardwick Green, Manchester, who died 21st February 1865”.

In 1871 William Gould, his wife and two children Richard Gould (aged three) and Anna Mary Gould (aged two), were living at Harley Villas in Todmorden, Yorkshire. Richard Gould 1867-1932) married Jane Leticia White of Liverpool at Toxteth Park on 12 May 1897 and they lived at Wallasey in Cheshire.

Martha Ann Gould died in 1870. By 1881 William Gould was lodging at Ben Croit Cottage, Braddan in the Isle of Man, where he died on 20 April 1886 aged 48 years.
