Summary of the Provisions of the Will of Thomas Hollis 1634-1718

£200 for buying mourning rings.

To Ann Hollis his wife £100 and the “Furniture in the Chamber wherein wee usually Lodge”.

To Thomas Hollis (son) £100 for himself, and £25 pa for Ann Hollis during her lifetime then for himself.

To Mary Winnick (granddaughter) £50.

To Isaac, Samuel, Jacob, Timothy, Hannah, Ann and Elizabeth Hollis (children of his son John Hollis) £700 equally when 21 or on marriage.

To Thomas Hollis (grandson) £200, and £50 pa for his father Nathaniel Hollis (son of testator) during his lifetime, then for William Ladds (grandson) during his lifetime, then for himself. Plus another £45 pa in trust for Nathaniel Hollis during his lifetime, then for himself.

To John Hollis (son) £50 pa for his daughter Mary Ladds for her lifetime, then for Mary Rennalls (granddaughter and daughter of Mary Ladds). [[No later provision.]

To William Ladds (grandson) £300 when 21.

To Hannah Hulton (cousin) £100 for her children (except James and Elizabeth, her eldest) or in default to James and Elizabeth. To James and Elizabeth £50 each.

Children of Hannah Brunt (late sister) £30 equally divided.

Children of Mary Gold “of Derbyshire” (late sister) £100 equally divided.

To Daniel Sheldon (cousin) £10.

To Ann Ramskar (cousin) £20.

To William Creswick and his sister Elizabeth Creswick £5 each.

To William Woolaston and Robert Rennalls (friends of the testator) £20 to be given to the poor of his acquaintance.

To Jeremy Hunt the interest on £100 for ten years.

Everything else to go to his executors (his sons Thomas Hollis and John Hollis) for paying all the legacies under the Will.

If the testator’s wife did not comply with his instructions in writing (regarding settlements made on their marriage or otherwise) then she got nothing under the Will but only what she was entitled to under those settlements.


CODICIL 11 January 1716/17

£15 pa more to his wife [[there named as Anne] for taking care of him [[in his last illness] but still under the same conditions.

To John Hollis interest on £100 in trust for Dorothy Malin (cousin) widow and her two daughters [[not named] for their education.

To Jeremiah Hunt an additional £20 [[lump sum].

The legacy to Elizabeth Hulton (daughter of his cousin Hannah Hulton) revoked, as the promised £50 had been paid to her on her marriage to John Edmonds.
