Mary Yates was born on 1870 at Didsbury in Manchester, the daughter of Samuel Yates 1831-1901 of Manchester and his wife née Mary McMullen 1832-1890.
His father was a seed merchant trading in the city.
On 12 November 1901 she was married to Samuel Abell 1869-1921 at Christ Church, Didsbury in Manchester (1). He was a manufacturer in Liverpool, and was born in 1869 at Hungry Bentley in Derbyshire, the son of John Abell, farmer.

When the 1911 Census was taken they were living at Branksome, Duffield in Derbyshire.
Also in the household was Ellen Dixon (sister of Mary Abell) and a ladies companion and female domestic servant. Unusually Mary Abell was recorded as the head of the household.
Mary Abell née Yates died on 18 March 1942 at Hale in Cheshire aged 53 years. Her Will was proved on 28 May 1924 (2).
Her husband Samuel Abell had predeceased her in 1921.
