Joseph Gilbert Gould was born in 1878 at in Kaniva, Victoria. He was the son of Charles Gould 1853-1889 and his wife née Grace Waters 1853-1889.
He married firstly Anne Bateson, daughter of Elias Bateson and his wife née Margaret Pincott, in 1908 in Victoria. Anne was born in 1882 in Miram, Victoria. She died on 30 December 1912. She was buried in Beverley, Western Australia (1).
Joseph Gilbert Gould married secondly Frances (Fanny) Ethel Down, daughter of Richard Down and his wife née Elizabeth Moran, on 14 February 1922 in Chalmers Church, Adelaide. She was born on 3 August 1883 in Mile End, South Australia. She died on 25 November 1964, and was buried on 27 November 1964 in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide (2).
During the First World War Private Joseph Gilbert Gould served in the 28th Infantry Battalion (3) of the First Australian Imperial Force (Service Number 2389) embarking at Freemantle on 13 October 1915 on board HMAT A32 Thermistocles (4).
Joseph Gilbert Gould died on 21 April 1946 in Mile End, South Australia, and was buried on 23 April 1946 in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide (5).

(3) The 28th Battalion was raised at Blackboy Camp in Western Australia on 16 April 1915, and left Australia in June 1915. After training in Egypt, the battalion landed at Gallipoli on 10 September as part of the reinforcing 7th Brigade. The 28th Battalion left in December 1915, having suffered only light casualties, for Egypt and then for the Western Front in France with the 7th Brigade as part of the 2nd Australian Division. The battalion fought at Pozières from July to August 1916, and on the Somme. In major battles in 1917 the 28th served in supporting roles, but were nonetheless involved in heavy fighting. In April 1918, the 28th Battalion fought to repulse the German spring offensive, from 8 August 1918 participating in the joint British and French offensive that marked the beginning of the German defeat. Soldiers of the 28th Battalion began returning to Australia in January 1919, and the battalion was disbanded in March 1919.
