John Henry Champion McGill was born on 20 September 1847 at Stoke Ferry in Norfolk, the son of the Reverend George Henry McGill and his wife nee Frances Champion 1811-1876, and baptised there on 24 October 1847.
He was educated at St Paul's School in London, and was admitted to Trinity College Cambridge on 1 October 1866. He graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1870 and Master of Arts in 1873. He was ordained deacon at Canterbury in 1870 and priest there in 1871, and was a Fellow and Tutor of St Augustine's College in Canterbury from 1870 to 1872.
He was Vicar of High Bentham in Yorkshire 1872-1877, Curate of All Saints Poplar in London 1878-1879, Curate of Staplehurst in Kent 1880-1885, Curate of Thornton Heath in Surrey 1886-1888, Curate of St Peter's Croydon 1888-1893, Rector of St Andrew's Deal in Kent 1893-1900, and Vicar of Isleworth in Middlesex 1900-1917 (1).
The Reverend John Henry Champion McGill married Maria Mann at Elham in Kent in 1880. She was born in 1846 at Ayton in Yorkshire. They had no children.
He died on 11 April 1917 aged 69 years (2).
