John Greensmith was born in 1746, the son of John Greensmith and his wife née Sarah Buxton of Bradbourne in Derbyshire. He was baptised on 24 July 1746 at Kniveton in Derbyshire.
He married Elizabeth Gilman on 30 June 1777 at Longford in Derbyshire. They farmed at Mammerton Farm on the Coke estate at Longford.
They had the following children:
John Gilman Greensmith. He was born in 1778, and baptised at Kniveton on 12 April 1778. He married Maria Jane Coke and they lived at Onchan in the Isle of Man. He died on 26 February 1846, and was buried on 7 March 1846 at Thorpe, where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory.
Joseph Greensmith. He was born in 1779, and baptised at Kniveton on 16 October 1779.
Elizabeth Greensmith. She was born in 1781, and baptised at Kniveton on 16 October 1781. She died on 29 June 1848, and was buried at Thorpe in Derbyshire, where there is a gravestone inscribed to her memory.
Sarah Greensmith. She was born in 1783, and baptised at Kniveton on 26 April 1783.
Their father John Greensmith died aged only 46 years on 20 October 1792 at Longford, where there is gravestone inscribed to his memory.
