Henry Tomkinson 1818-1905

Henry Tomkinson was born in 1818 at Endon in Staffordshire, the son of Thomas Tomkinson 1780-1834 and his wife née Ellen Peake 1779-1859, and was baptised there on 28 March 1818.

In 1839 he emigrated to Montevideo in Uruguay. In the following year he moved to Buenos Aires in Argentina, as representative of the firm Phillips Commercial Tomkinson & Company, based in London with branches in America and Oceania.

Within a few years he became sufficiently financially independent to found his own firm Henry Tomkinson & Company importing agricultural machinery, subsequently diversifying into other enterprises and partnerships. He promoted railway construction, and was Chairman of the Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires from 1871 to 1874. He introduced horse racing into the country.

On 13 June 1850 he married Virginia de Alvear, daughter of Carlos de Alvear and María del Carmen Saenz de la Quintanilla, in San Ignacio church, Buenos Aires in Argentina. She was born on 18 October 1824 in Buenos Aires, and died there on 3 May 1918.

Carmen Tomkinson de Alvear. She was born in 1851 in Buenos Aires and died on 3 September 1925.

Virginia Tomkinson de Alvear. She was born in 1853 in Buenos Aires.

Teodora Tomkinson Alvear. She was born on 18 December 1855 and died on 28 April 1924 in Paris.

Enrique Tomkinson y de Alvea. He was born in 13 August 1856 in Buenos Aires and died there on 8 December 1915.

Guillermo Tomkinson y de Alvear. He was born on 15 September 1858 in Buenos Aires.

Carolina Tomkinson Alvear. She was born on 23 April 1864 in Buenos Aires and died there on 2 April 1949.

Their father Henry Tomkinson died on 5 September 1905 in Buenos Aires.
