Ernest Bagshaw 1877-1960

Ernest Bagshaw was born in 1877 in Manchester, the son of William Bagshaw and his wife (name unknown). Although he was born in Manchester, the family had lived in and around Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire for generations.

In 1881 he was living at Earl Sterndale with his widowed grandmother Mary Bagshaw, born in 1820 at Noon Sun Farm near Longnor in Staffordshire. Also living there were his married aunt Jane Ann Wood (born at Longnor in 1844) and his unmarried aunt Hannah Bagshaw (born at Crowdecote in Derbyshire in 1846.

In 1891 he was working aged fourteen as a general labourer lodging with his grandmother Mary Bagshaw then living at Hindlow Bar near Buxton in Derbyshire.

He married Annie Elizabeth Warrington in 1897 at Christ Church in Burbage, Buxton.

When the 1901 Census was taken they were living at 54 Wash Brook in Burbage with four children. He was then recorded as a waggoner at a lime works. This would have been the Buxton Lime firm at nearby Grinlow. Annie Elizabeth Bagshaw died soon afterwards. They had the following children, all born in Burbage:

Jane Ann Bagshaw. She was born in 1898. She was married to Thomas Bagnall in 1921 at Chapel-en-le-Frith Register Office in Derbyshire, and died in Buxton in 1981.

Artemus Bagshaw. He was born in 1899 and baptised in Buxton in that year.

Nellie Bagshaw. She was born on 14 October 1900 and baptised in Buxton in that year. She was married to Arthur Parker in 1922 at Christ Church, Burbage. She died in 1984.

Ernest Bagshaw. He was born in 1904. He married Doris Lily Jones in 1925 at Chapel-en-le-Frith Register Office, and died in Buxton in 1968 aged 65 years.

Sydney Bagshaw. He was born on 6 September 1907 and baptised in Buxton in that year. He married Florence Evelyn Hodgkinson in 1928 at Chapel-en-le-Frith Register Office, and died in Buxton in 1975.

On 11 April 1904 Ernest Bagshaw married Martha Askey 1876-1911 at Alstonefield in Staffordshire, her native village. They had a daughter Hannah Bagshaw born on 18 April 1910, and lived at 2 Grin Row, Ladmanlow near Burbage. His grandmother went to live with them there in her old age, as when she died in 1905 she was buried from that address on 21 March 1905 at Hartington in Derbyshire aged 86 years.

Martha Bagshaw died on 23 March 1911 of acute pneumonia aged only 33 years.

When the 1911 Census was taken, the again widowed Ernest Bagshaw was still living at 2 Grin Row with four children by his first marriage aged from three to thirteen years. The infant daughter of Ernest Bagshaw by his second marriage Hannah Bagshaw was with her uncle Thomas Askey and his family in Buxton in 1911, but she was brought up as their own daughter by her maternal aunt Jane Wardle and her husband. Hannah Bagshaw married Ronald Emmerson of Buxton, and died in 1997.

Ernest Bagshaw died in Buxton in 1960 aged 84 years.
