Charles Edward Briggs 1843-1877

Charles Edward Briggs was born in London on 17 December 1843, the son of George Briggs 1802-1880 and his wife née Frances Gould 1809-1887. He was baptised on 16 May 1844 in St. Pancras Old Church in London.

He married Martha Redfern in 1870. She was born in 1839, and died in 1879.

They had the following children:

Amy Briggs. She was born in 1870, and died in 1918.

William Gould Briggs. He was born on 12 October 1871. He died on 14 October 1877, and was buried at Hartington in Derbyshire, where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory (1).

Charles Edward Briggs. He was born on 17 September 1873. He became an ordained clergyman. He died on 16 December 1949.

Their father Charles Edward Briggs died on 31 January 1877 aged only 33 years, and was buried on 3 February 1877 at Hartington, where there is a gravestone inscribed to his memory (2).

His wife Martha Briggs died on 20 January 1879 aged only 39 years.

(1) The gravestone is inscribed: "In/Affectionate Remembrance/of/William/Gould BRIGGS,/son of/Charles Edward & Martha BRIGGS,/of Hartington./Born October 21th. [sic] 1871,/Died October 14th. 1877,/"Of such is the kingdom of God". Mark x."

(2) The gravestone is inscribed: "In/Affectionate remembrance/of/Charles Edward BRIGGS/of Hartington/who died Jany 31st 1877/aged 33 years/also/of Martha his wife/who died Jany 20th 1879?/aged 39? years. [Inscribed around the top of the gravestone:] I know /O Lord, that thy Judge~/ments are right In /Affectionate Remembrance /of /Charles Edward BRIGGS,/of Hartington:/who died Jany. 31st 1877./Aged 33 Years./Also/of Martha his wife,/who died Jany. 20th 1879/Aged 39 Years."
